The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Technical Faculty in Niš was founded in 1960, as a part of the University of Belgrade. This Department developed into the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Niš, in 1971. In the year of its establishment, the Faculty had 19 professors and 16 teaching assistants in full-time employment, out of which 3 were PhDs and 4 MScs. At that moment, 11 departments were formed.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering today exemplifies an established education and research institution, which successfully follows the development of engineering sciences and technologies in the world, and represents the basis for a modern industry within the technological development of our country in the 21st century.

Today, there are 95 professors and teaching assistants, along with 60 of non-academic staff, employed at the Faculty, as well as several professors from other faculties and associates from the industry.

Throughout 52 years of tradition, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Niš has awarded its diploma to 111 PhDs, 179 MScs, 3907 graduate mechanical engineers, 327 mechanical engineers who completed three-year studies, and 727 mechanical engineers who completed two-year studies. In the academic year 2012/13, there are 475 students at the undergraduate academic studies, 208 students at the master academic studies, and 112 students at the doctoral academic studies.

There are four modules within the study programme of Engineering Management at master academic studies, and these are: International Project Management and Entrepreneurship; Energy Management; Management in Transport and Logistics, and Industrial Management.

RESEARCH

Apart from being an education institution, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is also a scientific research institution, which uses its scientific potential to contribute to the development and transfer of industrial technologies, nurture the engineering culture, create and evaluate scientific results, educate young people, and thus contribute to the development of the Republic of Serbia and society as a whole.

During the academic year 2012/13, professors and teaching assistants of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Niš participate in the realization of 23 projects within the areas of fundamental research, integral and interdisciplinary research, and technological development as part of the Research Programme of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia. Particular emphasis is placed in the scientific research activity on the participation in international projects (FP7, TEMPUS, CEEPUS, DAAD), as well as on the participation in scientific and professional gatherings in the country and abroad. The Faculty organizes and co-organizes many renowned conferences and seminars: MASING, HIPNEF, RAILCON, SIMTERM, SAUM, etc.

Scientific research activities and cooperation with the industry are organized in such a manner so as to involve the Departments of the Faculty in the basic scientific research, apart from conducting the teaching process, while the strategic, innovation research and direct cooperation with the industry is carried out through the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, with all this happening over a rich cooperation and working together with other faculties and scientific research organizations in the country and abroad.

The following centres function as parts of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering: Centre for Development and Design of Machines (CeRP), Centre for Welding and Welded Constructions, Centre for Transfer of New Technologies (TTC), Centre for Applied Mathematics, Centre for Transport and Logistics, Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics and Active Constructions, and Centre for Engines and Motor Vehicles. Apart from these centres, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Niš also houses centres which function as separate organizational units of the Faculty: Regional Centre for Energy Efficiency, Innovation Centre for Development and Application of Information Technologies, Training Centre, and Information Centre.

Within the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, the Laboratory for Examination of Pressure Gauges has been accredited by the ABS, and the Centre for Engines and Motor Vehicles has also been accredited as a control unit, with the accreditation procedure in progress for 5 more laboratories. The Institute of Mechanical Engineering performs attestations of motor vehicles, attestations in line with the ADR provisions, development of new products, testing and calibration of manometers, as well as realization of various studies, surveys, revisions, monitoring, product testing, expertises, expert opinions, measurements, design of industrial equipment and devices for the industry, state-owned, and private enterprises. Contracts of business and technical cooperation have been signed with a number of faculties, institutes, and other institutions in the country and abroad.
